Born in Virginia, raised in the Bronx, New York, and currently Working Out Of in Atlanta, Georgia, Jovonni has achieved a myriad of milestones in his recent career in which most independent artist never reach. “All without any help from the majors”, says Jovonni who also claims to be the pioneer of the “Hip-Pop” genre. One factor of his career that he emphasizes is his uncanny ability to never write his lyrics down. He simply "writes" his songs in his head and then records them. "I believe that rappers tend to create there experiences when they jot them on paper, it's really easy for me to make these songs in my head because I actually live what I speak and I just have to locate it in my head; who knows maybe I'm just nice like that (Laugh)."
To the government, he is known as Jovonni Pharr. Creativity has yet to see this level in hip hop in quite some time. Is it the lyrical content? Is it the looks? Is it the popularity? The truth is there is no formula. Growing up middle classed has never been good enough for Jovonni. Hence, he has set out to do something about it. “I honestly do not consider myself a rapper, I am a recording artist; I record art. I have never set out to pursue music for money. Yes, the money is good, but I have a passion for this. Ask anybody who has ever been to the studio with me, they will vouch for me.”
Close to a homeless upbringing, Jovonni resorting to music as a ticket out of poverty. It was then that he discovered a natural talent for it. "Your everyday rapper raps about what the majority of his fans don't want to hear". He says, "When I make a song, I don't rap about guns or drugs because I have no knowledge of those things. I rap about things that I know all of my fans can relate to. Let's be serious, 1 out of 5 Kids have actually witnessed that lifestyle. I rap for the other four".
Though only 20, Jovonni has seen his side of the wrong tracks. "I dropped out of high school, like a dummy, for 2 years. That's when I moved to Atlanta and registered back into school; I saw straight A's after that lol" Also a business man at heart, Jovonni owns a successful business away from music. "What can I say? Ha, I have more responsibilities than your average 20 year old."
He is currently unsigned (by choice) but affiliated with SummerHill Music Group, lead by Atlanta underground legend MarWon. After seeing MarWon at a local barbershop, Jovonni quickly asked him, “Excuse me sir, but what do you do?" It was then that the team would pair up.
While during his career underground, he has been able to link up with local producers such as Kochease (Young Joc's "I know you see it"), rising producer, Illa Jones (All Cool), heat maker A-Plu$$ (My Main, Heat Rock, & Don't Act), and his current Star producer Mysfit (Don't Snip My Wings, Ish Don't Stink, Better Yet Show Me and more).
After the success of his first album, "From Then Til Now", Jovonni has generated an estimated 250,000+ downloads via file sharing websites. He is now working on his second studio album entitled "City of Sound". It is scheduled for release in the late 2009-Early 2010.
So what's the next step for the 21 year-old entrepreneur? With a great deal of pressure, musically and personally, Jovonni still manages to remain fully enrolled in school. Now as a college student, Jovonni Realizes that the stakes have risen. "Bring it on" he says "Because I'm just getting started, the world WILL hear me”.
